Cleaning Fireplace Surrounds
Your fireplace surround should be cleaned on a regular basis. Even if you do not actually use your fireplace, dust can build up and result in a dingy look to your fireplace surround if you do not keep it clean.
Dust should be removed from your mantel and surround regularly to avoid build up and settling of dust particles in the grain of the mantel. An electrostatic duster is a great choice because it attracts dust rather than rubbing dirt into the grain where it is harder to remove.
When your fireplace surround needs a deeper cleaning, use a gentle cleaning solution in water on a clean rag. Small, circular motions will help lift up embedded dirt for easier removal. Rinse with plain water and a clean cloth until all of the dirt and cleaning solution are removed. Soak up as much excess water as possible and allow to air dry.
Stains can be removed with a paste of baking soda and water. Gently rub the paste into the area, working from the outside to the inside to avoid spreading. Allow to remain overnight, then rinse with a cloth dampened in clear water until all the paste is removed. A cleaning eraser used as directed can also work on many stains too.
