How to Clean Fireplace Surrounds

How to Clean Fireplace SurroundsMany people do not think about cleaning their fireplace surrounds or mantels until they become stained or obviously dirty, when it is a little more difficult to clean and requires more work. Regular cleaning can help keep your fireplace surround looking new for many years to come.

Dust your fireplace surround frequently with a duster that attracts dust. This prevents dirt from being pressed into the grain of the material and any intricate details of your mantel. Pressed in dirt may be removed with a solution of a gentle cleaner mixed with water. Use a separate soft rag for washing and rinsing, being sure not to soak the rags but keep them just slightly damp. If necessary, use a soft bristled brush to get into any crevices or grain. Alternatively, a cotton-tipped swab may help you to get into spaces that would otherwise be hard to reach.

Stains can be removed by applying a paste made with baking soda and water. Very little water is necessary to make a good paste. Rub into the stained area, layer on a bit more paste, and allow to remain overnight. Wipe off with a damp rag. Eraser sponges can also be used to remove stains.
