How to Clean Fireplace Surrounds
Many people do not think about cleaning their fireplace surrounds or mantels until they become stained or obviously dirty, when it is a little more difficult to clean and requires more work. Regular cleaning can help keep your fireplace surround looking new for many years to come.
Dust your fireplace surround frequently with a duster that attracts dust. This prevents dirt from being pressed into the grain of the material and any intricate details of your mantel. Pressed in dirt may be removed with a solution of a gentle cleaner mixed with water. Use a separate soft rag for washing and rinsing, being sure not to soak the rags but keep them just slightly damp. If necessary, use a soft bristled brush to get into any crevices or grain. Alternatively, a cotton-tipped swab may help you to get into spaces that would otherwise be hard to reach.
Stains can be removed by applying a paste made with baking soda and water. Very little water is necessary to make a good paste. Rub into the stained area, layer on a bit more paste, and allow to remain overnight. Wipe off with a damp rag. Eraser sponges can also be used to remove stains.
