How Often Should Fireplace Mantels be Cleaned?
When it comes to cleaning fireplace mantels, they should be cleaned regularly. Everybody has their own respective levels of cleanliness, but you want to make sure that you are at the very least not allowing dirt to accumulate on your mantel.
With a stone mantel, you want to be careful with how you are cleaning it. Natural stone in particular is delicate and can scratch easily if you use the wrong type of cleaner. If the dirt and dust buildup is not too severe, you may be fine using warm water and a clean white towel. If the surface is soiled enough that it requires more than that, mix three parts water with one part mild detergent. You can also use products that are sold to clean concrete or masonry. Avoid acid-based cleaners, as using them can permanently damage your mantel. Alkaline-based cleaners can be just as bad, so also be sure to avoid using them.
If something has spilled onto the surface of the fireplace mantel, be sure to clean it as soon as possible. Letting a stain settle into the stone can irreparably harm the mantel. When cleaning up a spill, be sure to blot the spill with a paper towel or a clean white rag. Whatever you do, do not wipe the spill, as doing so can cause the stain to further work its way into the stone.
